There are 2 days till college football season, and today we talk about the only SEC football coaches to bring home a conference championship.

SEC football is unlike college football anywhere else in the country. Sure, the ACC was better last season, and the Big Ten is heavy at the top with three teams in the top 10 of the preseason polls this season, but like the Southeastern Conference slogan goes: In the SEC, it just means more.

The Southeastern Conference has the biggest stadiums, the most passionate fans, and the best players. But in 2017, it certainly does not have the best coaches. The current crop of SEC football coaches are so unproven, it’s scary.

There are several coaches that could end up being great, but it’s still too early to tell. It seems like half of the conference has a head coach that’s in their second or third year, while the other half of the conference has a coach that is a seven or eight-win season away from being fired. And that leads us to no. 2 on the Southbound and Down College Football Countdown.

Only 2 current SEC football coaches have won an SEC Championship

Southbound and Down Countdown: 3: Christian Kirk: One of the best in the country

SEC football has come a long way since the days of Urban Meyer, Les Miles, Mark Richt, and Steve Spurrier walking the sidelines, and it doesn’t appear to be moving in the right direction. As recent as 2010, there were six head coaches in the conference that had won an SEC title, but that is no longer the case.

More from Southbound and Down

Nick Saban and Gus Malzahn are the only current SEC football coaches that have won a conference championship. Saban won two SEC titles at LSU in 2001 and 2003, and has since won five conference championships at Alabama. Gus Malzahn won his only conference championship in his first year at Auburn in 2013.

Not only have just two current SEC coaches won a conference title, only three have even been to the SEC Championship game, with Jim McElwain winning the SEC East each of the last two years.

LSU was the last team outside of the state of Alabama to win the SEC when they won the conference, but lost to Alabama in the national championship back in 2011. But Miles is not walking through that door.

This year could be different. Ed Orgeron and Kirby Smart each have LSU and Georgia trending in the right direction, but don’t be surprised if it’s more of the same in 2017.
