Georgia Football: Bulldogs Staff Still Lacking Coordinator

Georgia lost its defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach, Mel Tucker as he took the head coaching job at Colorado.

For the most part, who will be the next coordinator has been kept under lock and key.

Georgia recently hired Charlton Warren, who will coach the defensive backs.  With the addition of Warren, the Bulldogs defensive coaching staff seems complete.

However, there hasn’t been an announcement of who will take Tucker’s role as the defensive coordinator. So the underlying question is whether or not head coach Kirby Smart decides to stay within or go outside the program for his hire?

The safe bet would be to promote from within, and it seems that is what Smart will likely do. If Smart decides to go this route, here are the two coaches I think with likely get the nod.

Dan Lanning

Lanning came to Georgia from Memphis after the 2017 season, and it didn’t take long to see that his style of coaching matched that of Smart. The two seem to sync right away, and Lanning has already shown how good he can be on and off the field.

He helped develop and polish D’Andre Walker into a potential first or second-round draft pick. Lanning helped guys like Adam Anderson, Brenton Cox, and others get ready for the much needed playing time they received toward the end of the season.

At Memphis, he served as the outside linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator for two years. Once he got to Georgia, it didn’t take his recruiting skills long to show.

According to 247Sports recruiter rankings, he ranks as the No. 19 overall recruiter in the country and No. 9 in the SEC.

On his 247Sports coaching profile, Lanning has brought in two five-stars, five four-stars, and one three-star. He is responsible for pulling in the No. 1 ILB prospect, Nakobe Dean from Mississippi.

Even though Lanning has only been with the Bulldogs a year, he knows what Smart likes in football players and on the field. In my opinion, he would be the first choice to receive the promotion.

Glenn Schumann

Schumann was Smart’s first hire when he accepted the head coaching job at Georgia.  Another young, fiery and passionate coach, Schumann didn’t take long to show his worth.

The best example of what Schumann brings to the table is the development of Roquan Smith. He helped Smith become the first player in Georgia history to receive the Butkus Award. If it wasn’t for Schumann, Smith may not be where he is now.

Schumann is one of the team’s best recruiters as well. According to 247Sports recruiter rankings, he ranks as the No. 6 overall recruiter and the No. 3 in the SEC. Schumann has brought in four five-stars, six four-stars and one three-star.

For the 2019 class, he was responsible for Nolan Smith who on the 247Sports ranking system ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect in the country. N. Smith is just one of the many players Schumann’s responsible for since he arrived at Georgia.

As for what he has done on the field, he helped Georgia during its 2017 national championship run. The Bulldogs defense finished second in the SEC and sixth nationally in scoring defense (16.4ppg) and total defense (294.9). Georgia finished second in the SEC in rushing defense as well.

If Lanning doesn’t get the promotion, Schumann is next in line.

What will Smart decide?

Smart has a tough decision to make if he decides to promote from within the program. However, what he might do is give Schumann and Lanning co-coordinator position and let the two of them tackle it.

They’re both young coaches and would be two of the youngest coordinators in college football.  Smart is trying to build a dynasty at Georgia, and these two young coaches could be what the Bulldogs need to do that.
