The Verdict

Having an aging legend roam your sidelines is always a delicate situation. Nearly everyone hopes the Ole Ball Coach puts a nice run together and is able to call it quits whenever he decides. Outside of Clemson, Georgia and Florida State fans, most fans genuinely like Spurrier. He is a honest, brash, legendary winner.

“I simply believe that twelve years as head coach at a major university in the SEC is long enough.” – Steve Spurrier

He says things others are too scared to. He wins big games. His run of success in college football is outright remarkable. Much like he did at Florida, Spurrier proved winning big at South Carolina is possible.

The game Spurrier has been a part of for longer than many of us have been alive will not be the same when he walks away. But that time is coming soon. The chance at national glory for Spurrier at South Carolina has likely passed. The Ole Ball Coach has built sustainable momentum, but USC-east cannot afford to let him overstay and undo the consistency he has established.

Steve Spurrier has admittedly earned the chance to prove the naysayers wrong and coach the Gamecocks in 2015, which will be his 11th season. He may even have another year as well (it is Spurrier…he may find another gear and coach until he is 100). But after that, the Ole Ball Coach said it best when he resigned from Florida, “I simply believe that twelve years as head coach at a major university in the SEC is long enough.”
