The 2015 NCAA Tournament Day 1 was both kind and unkind to the SEC entrants.

The SEC had five teams entering into the NCAA Tournament, and at the end of the first day of play in the field of 64, only 3 teams remain, with both LSU and Ole Miss making early exits from the round of 64.

Ole Miss was down 36-24 at the half, and just looked tired. The comeback against BYU may have taken its toll on the Rebs in the first half, who were getting into early foul trouble and shooting horribly from the outside.

This was a typical Xavier basketball game in that it was played with a very physical nature, and no basket went uncontested.

  • The Mustketeers’ zone defense had Ole Miss befuddled, and as Rebels’ head coach Andy Kennedy described his team “passive”.  That combined with the X-men buring shots from the outside, spelled doom for the overmatched Rebels.

In the end, it was just too much for the Rebels to handle, and they showed their fatigue against an inspired and fast-moving Xavier team. Even in the loss, M.J. Rhett and Stefan Moody still had big time games, scoring 12 and 14 points respectively, and accounted for 26 of Ole Miss’ 57 points.

Ole Miss can be proud of a great season, and gave everyone a thrilling game against BYU in round one.  But the Rebels were the first of the five SEC teams to be eliminated.
