In three seasons of Will Muschamp, Florida administration saw a pattern. An inability to produce points on offense led to an inability to produce football championships for the Gators.
When the Gators hired McElwain, they new they would be getting an offensive genius. A five million dollar buyout was a secondary concern.
On defense, the Gators should be fine. A top fifteen defense returns All-American corner Vernon Hargreaves, All-Conference linebacker Antonio Morrison, along with five other starters.
To compete for a conference championship this season, McElwain’s offense will need to run very smoothly. The system is quite simple. But without running back Matt Jones and receiver Quinton Dunbar, how well will UF be able to run the system?
That question remains to be answered, but let’s just say that quarterback Treon Harris needs to begin to identify guys he will need to ‘feed’ the ball to. Perhaps running back Kelvin Taylor and receiver DeMarcus Robinson?
Balance needed: Treon Harris and the offense have work to do, and that’s why ‘Vegas is doubting UF in the preseason.
