The Case For. .  .

Steve Spurrier has amassed an 84-45 (.651) record during his time leading the Gamecocks. While this winning percentage is a far cry from what he accomplished while at Florida (.817), it is still an impressive improvement over the school’s all-time winning percentage (.514).

  • This fact is even more evident when one considers that the Gamecocks’ win percentage would drop below .500 if Spurrier’s stint is excluded.

Spurrier’s elevation of the South Carolina program has not been limited to regular season play. By reaching 9 bowl games, the Ole Ball Coach has nearly doubled the number the school has appeared in all-time (20).  While the Ole Ball Coach has only gone 5-4 in those bowls, it is still an improvement to the 3-8 bowl record the Gamecocks owned prior to his arrival.  The Gamecocks have seen improvement in every subcategory of the only category that matters: winning.

Although unable to develop any Danny Wuerffel-type quarterbacks like he did at Florida, Spurrier has in-part elevated South Carolina by luring more elite talent to play for the Gamecocks.  Jadeveon Clowney, Stephon Gilmore, Melvin Ingram, Alshon Jeffery, Captain Munnerlyn, and even Ryan Succop are all Spurrier players that Gamecock fans have enjoyed watching on Sundays.

What have been the greatest accomplishments of Spurrier’s time with the Gamecocks?  Three straight 11-win seasons (2011-13) that included the school’s only trip to the SEC Championship game likely tops the list. A five game win streak over the other in-state Power 5 school also serves as a bragging point for Spurrier’s tenure.

And who can forget this? Jadeveon Clowney’s near decapitation of Vincent Smith in the 2013 Outback Bowl, a victory for the Gamecocks, likely still haunts Brady Hoke’s dreams.

Steve Spurrier has elevated the University of South Carolina Gamecocks’ football program like no coach before him.  An SEC Championship would likely be enough to get his name etched on either the field or stadium.  So why would South Carolina fans even dream of another coach?
