Florida’s Recent Hires

Including interim coaches, the Florida Gators have had 7 head coaches since 1990.  Two have been extraordinarily successful. The rest? Not so much.

  • Steve Spurrier (1990-2001):  .879 Win %, 6 SEC Championships, 1 National Championship, 3X SEC Coach of the Year, Coached Heisman Winner

Ron Zook (2002-2004): .667 Win %, zero titles

Charlie Strong (2004):  Served as interim coach for 2004 Peach Bowl, a 27-10 loss to Miami

Urban Meyer (2005-2010):  .813 Win %, 3 SEC Championships, 2 National Championships, National Coach of the Decade, Coached Heisman Winner

Meyer was possibly the most simultaneously appreciated/hated former coach by any fan base

    Will Muschamp (2011-2014):  .531 Win %

D.J. Durkin (2014):  Served as interim coach for 2014 Birmingham Bowl, a 28-20 win over East Carolina

    Jim McElwain (2015)

Of Note:  Both Spurrier (Duke) and Meyer (Utah) led non-traditional powers to all-time heights for their program before arriving in Gainesville.

Muschamp had zero head coaching experience, though he was serving as a head coach in waiting at Texas before leaving for Florida. One has to wonder if the success of Spurrier and Meyer (and failure of Muschamp) influenced Jeremy Foley’s decision to hire McElwain after his successful stint at Colorado State
