The Case for Pinkel . . .

Gary Pinkel has been a Division I head coach for 24 years, compiling a 186-103-3 record (.642 win %).  Pinkel’s 186 wins are good for 6th among active FBS coaches in wins.

  • Excluding his time at Toledo, Pinkel has amassed an impressive 113-66 (.631 win %) record over 14 years leading the Missouri Tigers in the Big 12 and SEC.

Gary Pinkel has also improved Mizzou’s bowl record (15-16 all time) to nearly .500, winning 6 of the 10 bowls he has guided the Tigers to.

His success has not gone unnoticed.  Pinkel owns the 2007 FieldTurf National, 2007 Big 12 Co-, and 2014 SEC Coach of the Year Trophies.  The man wins.

Some coaches lean on weak out of conference scheduling to boost their career win numbers.  Though his win percentage does jump, Pinkel has amassed a winning conference record in both the SEC and Big 12 while guiding the Tigers.

Before you degrade his combined .558 conference win percentage, understand that Mizzou is a nontraditional power playing ball on Saturdays with a who’s-who of traditional and emerging powers alike.

Recruiting rankings are obviously something Pinkel does not concern himself with.  People love to point out that Gary Pinkel does not recruit as well as some of his SEC brethren.  That does not seem to matter much, however, due to Pinkel’s evaluation of lower ranked talent.  Proof, you say?  Mizzou is in the top-5 in most NFL first-round draft picks since 2007.

So what gives?  Gary Pinkel wins, elevates his players, collects division titles, and owns a handful of coach of the year awards.

Can a case be made that it may be time for Mizzou to look elsewhere for the first time in a quarter century.
