As a part of an American society with an innate desire to mock, tear down and criticize subpar performances, I selfishly deem it necessary to open up this weekly article venting about who just let me down the previous week. I use this opportunity to do what I can to break down the player that just made me look foolish by putting him in my top 5 SEC Heisman Hopefuls. Whether it has been ripping up Chad Kelly for his antics versus Vanderbilt or just making sure you realize how terrible Greyson Lambert performed, I’ve enjoyed writing the opening to this SEC Heisman Hopefuls article each week more than I would like to admit. However, as this week’s article is set to begin, I am in no way looking forward to or excited about writing this opening like I have been in the past.
What happened to Nick Chubb this weekend makes me sick to my stomach. No not the video, even though that is gruesome in and of itself. The story that has been Nick Chubb took an unexpected and undeserved twist of fate this past Saturday and I can’t remember being so bothered by such an injury. I don’t know a person that saw it and didn’t immediately turn away and say “oh no….”. I was in that group of people, and I hate Georgia.
My infatuation with seeing Nick Chubb excel is really inexplicable. Maybe it has to do with despite tying Herschel Walker’s record, Leonard Fournette has been the one drawing comparisons to SEC greats. Maybe it is because he entered the 2014 season as a top 100 prospect, yet he was the least discussed prospect in his own backfield. Maybe it is because he was buried on the depth chart behind sensation Todd Gurley and higher ranked freshman running back Sony Michel. Then Todd Gurley went down. Then Sony Michel hurt his ankle.
Maybe it is because after all that, Nick Chubb just completely took over and the afterthought balled out. He showed the marks of a professional by waiting his turn and seizing the opportunity given to him as a true freshman. He started a streak of 100 yard rushing games that matched the great Herschel Walker and, on the day he was going to attempt to break the prestigious Georgia record, his knee was ripped to shreds.
The world is an unfair place and the world of sports is even more brutal. While it is expected for Chubb to make a full recovery, you hate to see someone work from 3rd string to team captain in the course of a year and this to be how he is repaid. I’ve got nothing but faith in Nick Chubb that he will make a full recovery. My thoughts and prayers are with him, and we all wish him the best. The good news is that, according to ESPN, the school released a statement saying that Chubb had suffered a significant injury to his left knee that damaged multiple ligaments and cartilage but not the ACL. We look forward to seeing him back on our 2016 SEC Heisman Hopefuls List.
Hold up. I still need to vent. There was someone else that let me down after making this SEC Heisman Hopefuls list last week, and I’m still as American as burgers and fries. Will Grier, you son of…..
