The NFL Draft didn’t go as planned for the SEC, especially Ole Miss offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil.

Bro.  What the hell just happened?

That may have been the craziest draft night I’ve ever seen.  Laremy Tunsil had a bong video released via his own twitter account literally 10 minutes before the draft, and the video cost him dearly.  Darren Rovell used last year’s numbers to estimate the fall in the draft cost Tunsil at least 7.3 million dollars.

Then texts that were allegedly between him and a coach were posted to his instagram page.  Last but not least, dude goes on stage afterwards and admits he took money from a coach.

What’s this mean for Ole Miss?  What’s this mean for the SEC?

Well, it means for Ole Miss, their party just got spoiled.  Tonight Ole Miss fans were prepared to celebrate 3 players going in the 1st round and I’m sure they had high hopes of Tunsil going top 5.  It was rumored the Ravens were set to take him at 6 until the video surfaced.

Then the photos, and oh my God the press conference.  Ole Miss fans are literally losing sleep tonight, and it isn’t because they’ll be up partying.  I’m guessing full blown depression as the walls of their dream classes seem to be crashing in on them.

  • The Tunsil debacle overshadowed the fact that the conference performed strong in the 1st round of this year’s NFL draft.  The conference was able to get 8 players drafted in the first round, but it was the first time in years that an SEC player hasn’t been drafted in the top 5.

Despite Ohio State being able to send 5 players in the top 20, the Big Ten was still only able to get 6 players drafted in the 1st round. The ACC and the PAC 12 were both able to send 4 players into the NFL draft in the 1st round. The Big 12 had the fewest picks totaled from the Power 5 with only 3 players taken in the first round.

Unfortunately, the SEC will not be remembered for the 8 players it put in the 1st round of this year’s NFL draft.  The SEC will be affiliated with the school that Laremy Tunsil played for during college.  I swear that I’d love for the SEC  to not be the conference that puts out the player with so much baggage.  Just one year would be nice.

Instead, Ole Miss will be used as a lighting rod for the people that say the SEC is only as good as it is because all of the schools “buy” their players.  Ole Miss and the SEC also have the crazy story of Robert Nkemdiche.

The conference starts to look more like a MTV reality show than a championship football conference. Add this to the NCAA’s decision to overturn the ban on satellite camps, and you’ve got a pretty powerful punch to the gut of the SEC, and Hugh Freeze.
