The Good

Florida

I’ll admit, I’m reaching here to find something good to say about the SEC’s performance in the Super Regionals this weekend. Florida at least gives us a glimmer of hope. They spent much of the year dominating their opponents and came into the tournament as the number 1 seed. Florida State quickly showed Florida that they had put the regular season behind them and were coming to Gainesville to play ball.

Florida State’s starting pitcher, Drew Carlton, dominated Game 1. He threw a complete game and only gave up 2 hits. He didn’t give up a single walk and struck out 5 as Florida State rolled in a 3-0 victory over the University of Florida. It is worth mentioning that Florida swept Florida State in the 3 games they played in the regular season, so, for Florida State to come out in game 1 like this was a bit of a surprise.

Game 2 went a little more according to Florida’s plan. Logan Shore started for the Gators and went 8 innings, striking out 9 while walking 2 and giving up 2 hits. The Gators were up 2-0 heading into the 8th and Florida State was lucky to get out of the 8th only trailing 4-0, but they would still go on to lose 5-0 as the Gators dominated the Florida State batting line up.

Now, it is on to the deciding Game 3. Florida will be sending A.J. Puk to the mound to go for the series clinching win. Puk was just drafted sixth overall, and I always find it interesting to see where a college player’s head is at after being drafted so high in the same week. The Florida State Seminoles have yet to face Puk this year, and I have to figure that plays in the favor of the Gators. A.J. Puk is one of the best pitchers of the year, and although I didn’t expect him to be carrying the burden of the entire conference on his shoulders, the SEC and the Florida Gators have the right guy on the mound to the get the Gators through to the next round and help save face for SEC baseball.
