SEC Football: Game Balls, Top Performers for Week Two
Offense: Ralph Webb, RB, Vanderbilt
Ralph Webb effectively is the Vanderbilt offense this season. Against Middle Tennessee State, Webb absolutely went off. He carried the ball 29 times for 211 yards and two touchdowns. The rest of the team combined accounted for just 133 yards of total offense in the game.
I did the math. That’s 61% of the teams offensive production. I think it is safe to say that Webb carried his team to a victory in this one. I think Ralph Webb has the talent to be an NFL back. And if he were at a school like Alabama, I think he’d be getting Heisman buzz. He’s that good.
Honorable Mentions:
Derrius Guice, RB, LSU
Guice is the backup to Heisman candidate Leonard Fournette, but he showed on Saturday that he is a great player in his own right. Guice rushed 19 times for 155 yards and a touchdown against Jacksonville State. He also added 18 receiving yards on one catch.
Guice is not quite the physical, freight-train style runner that Fournette is. He is, however, perhaps more explosive. This week he averaged 8.2 yards per carry. That is an insane number. Fournette will likely be gone after this season, which just means more carries for Guice. SEC defenses will find no reprieve there.
Austin Allen, QB, Arkansas
Allen led his team to a double-overtime win against TCU. He threw for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns, with no interceptions. Prior to the beginning of the season, I wondered if Austin could fill his older brother’s shoes. I think, so far, that the answer is an emphatic “yes.”
Allen has a good arm and can really sell the play-action fake. He has the ability to make the defense respect him. If you come up to play the run hard Allen can burn you. That is critical in Bret Bielema’s ground and pound attack. The Hogs could be a dark horse in the West this season if Allen can keep up his high level of play.
