SEC Football: Game Balls, Top Performers for Week Two
Defense: Brooks Ellis, LB, Arkansas
Ellis had a big game for the Hogs this week. He made 13 tackles, 8 of which were solo. But he also had a vital pick-six that he housed from 47 yards out. Arkansas needed every point in this one, so obviously Ellis’s interception was crucial.
Ellis is a senior leader on the Arkansas defense. He was pegged before the season as a third team All-SEC selection. I think that could be a bit low. I’m not sure if Ellis has the raw athleticism to be an NFL star, but he is a great collegiate level linebacker.
Honorable Mentions:
Micah Abernathy, S, Tennessee
Abernathy had a great game in what was only his second career start. Abernathy made three solo tackles. More importantly, however, he recovered three fumbles for the Volunteers. The fumble recoveries would ultimately lead to 14 points for the Volunteers.
Abernathy is still young, but Volunteer fans have to be excited about him. Though just a raw sophomore, Abernathy currently leads the nation in fumbles recovered. if he can start getting interceptions too, Abernathy could be a real impact player in the SEC for years to come.
Eddie Jackson, S, Alabama
Like Abernathy, Jackson didn’t make too many tackles this week. He made just three solo and one assisted. But, like Ellis, Jackson had a momentum-stealing pick six. The game was just 10-3 when Jackson caught the pass at his own 45. He proceeded to weave his way through the Western Kentucky offense for an electrifying 55 yard touchdown.
Jackson is a savvy, veteran player in the Tide secondary. He, along with Marlon Humphrey, are two of the leaders on the Alabama defense this season. Jackson was a corner who, after a knee injury, became too slow to be a corner. He could have washed out easily. But instead he switched to safety and became a star. You have to like those types of stories.
