2. Who Wins the Battle for the Basement?

Perennial doormats Vanderbilt and Kentucky face off this weekend in what I’ve dubbed “The Battle for the Basement.” Whoever loses this game will take their rightful place as the worst team in the SEC.

On offense, Vanderbilt is a one man show. Ralph Webb is the engine that makes the Commodore offense go. Unfortunately for Vanderbilt, other teams are well aware of this and have loaded the box and dared the Commodores to pass. Thanks to the extremely poor efforts of Kyle Shurmur, that strategy has worked all too well.

Meanwhile, Kentucky’s offense is almost equally as one-dimensional. The only real difference is that Kentucky has more than one person who can tote the rock. Stanley Williams is the bellcow, but Jojo Kemp and Benny Snell are capable backups. In addition, quarterback Stephen Johnson is a threat to run.

The offensive edge goes to Kentucky, but what about defense? I have to give it to Vanderbilt. The Commodores are a scrappy bunch. A week ago they held Florida to just 13 points. Despite the fact that their offense was completely inept.

I think this will be a tight, ugly game. But I’m picking Vanderbilt to pull it out.
