SEC Football: Former Saban assistants are taking over the SEC
By Abbey Giese
Jimbo Fisher
The Texas A&M Aggies hired Jimbo Fisher as head coach this year after firing Kevin Sumlin. Fisher was Saban’s offensive coordinator at LSU. Like Muschamp, he was with the Tigers when they won the national championship in 2003.
Fisher does actually have a successful record as a head coach. With the Florida State Seminoles, he won a national championship, three ACC titles, and he won the Atlantic division of the ACC four times.
However, in Fisher’s final seasons at Florida State, the Seminoles struggled to compete with the Clemson Tigers for the Atlantic division title. Clemson has a three-year winning streak against Florida State, and the Tigers have won the ACC for three straight seasons.
Fisher will have even tougher competition in the SEC West since he will have to compete with his former boss for a division title. The Auburn Tigers could also be a challenge for Fisher. The Tigers have won the SEC West in recent seasons. Head coach Gus Malzahn also seems pretty confident about Auburn’s future.
