Georgia basketball defeats Tech just like football
The Georgia basketball team defeated arch-rival Georgia Tech in basketball 80 – 59. The Bulldog’s most consistent effort of the season produced a huge bounce back win. Plus, it was Tech.
Just like football
It could have been Nick Chubb and Sony Michel grinding against a Georgia Tech defense Tuesday night in Georgia’s Stegeman Coliseum. The results were the same. The Georgia basketball Bulldogs romped through a Georgia Tech basketball defense to score 44 second half points on a 71 percent shooting second half, including 67 percent from behind the three-point arc.
The Dawgs complemented the offensive effort with Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy style defensive pressure. Georgia held Tech to 25 percent shooting that included no makes on seven attempts from beyond the arc.

Newfound Bulldog consistency
In early games this season, the Dawgs jumped out to early leads only to watch opponents come back. Against Tech, Georgia played mature and consistent basketball for 40 minutes. It would have been a giant bounce back from the pathetic showing against U Mass against any team. Against the biggest of all rivals, it was everything.
The celebration continues
After the first half ended with Georgia leading by two, the Georgia Nation used the intermission to continue its football celebration. The SEC Championship Trophy was displayed and the football team presented before a roaring, rocking and stomping crowd of 10,048 in the refurbished Stegeman Coliseum. But the loudest cheers were reserved for the Governor’s Cup, presented to Georgia after defeating Tech in football.
Quite likely, the Georgia basketball team heard the halftime roars and said, “Why not us, too.”
The answer was, “No particular reason.”
Second half surge
The Georgia basketball team returned to the court for the final stanza, and Yante Maten immediately blocked a Tadric Jackson shot. Derek Ogbeide claimed the rebound and sprinted the length of the court. He rewarded himself with a layup for a four point Georgia lead. The game was never again as close .
After the under 16 media timeout, Maten and Rayshaun Hammonds sandwiched jumpers around two Ogbeide rebounds to give Georgia a 12 point lead and Georgia total control. Georgia gave the Jackets three consecutive turnovers with ten minutes to play and the lead was 10, but the visitors never got closer.
