Running back competition is wide open

In the Auburn Tigers’ race to replace last year’s SEC offensive player of the year in Kerryon Johnson, along with 2016’s leading rusher in Kam Pettway, all we heard going into the spring was that the running back competition would be wide open. Well it seems the coaches might have been true to their word.

So far it doesn’t seem like any one player has stood out enough to position themselves at the top yet. Kam Martin has the leg up with experience, but he has some talented young players to hold off including sophomore Devan Barrett, redshirt freshman JaTarvious Whitlow and true freshmen Asa martin and Harold Joiner.

Whitlow had the biggest play in the scrimmage as it was said that he reversed field and ran 80 yards for the scrimmage’s only touchdown.

The Auburn Tigers’ A Day game will shed more light on what we can expect in the fall. It doesn’t really matter who it is though. All Auburn does is spit out 1,000 yard rushers (11 since 2009) and it doesn’t matter if they’re a highly touted recruit like Kerryon Johnson or a three star fullback turned running back like Kam Pettway.
