Player standards vs. coach standards

This, on player recruitment from Butch Jones, the fired Tennessee head coach, is smothered in irony. Also to Nicole Auerbach, USA TODAY.

“You’re always trying to look into everything and gain as much information as you possibly can with background checks and character references,” Tennessee coach Butch Jones said about accepting player transfers. “There’s a lot that goes into it in terms of research, researching the background, the character, and really trying to dive into, ‘Does this individual fit your football program?'”

The standard for Tennessee football players under Butch Jones was apparently higher than that for football coaches under Urban Meyer at Ohio State. Could Butch Jones have kept his job by lowering his standards for football players? Maybe, but he didn’t, and he was fired.

Next. Media Days madness. dark

Urban Meyer should join Butch Jones at the unemployment office. But while Jones deserves, and will get, a second chance to lead young men, Urban Meyer should not.
