Head Coach Tom Crean gained his first two Georgia basketball commitments for the class of 2019 yesterday. He then received his first de-commitment. On balance, it was a good 24 hours.

First, four-star guard recruit Jaykwon Walton, from Montgomery’s Carver High School, committed to Georgia basketball. Later, four-star point guard recruit Kyle Sturdivant of Norcross also committed.

Georgia basketball fans went to sleep with their Dawgs 2019 recruiting class ranked in the top ten nationally.

This morning, Sturdivant de-committed.

The Georgia basketball recruiting yo-yo

Basketball recruiting is not for the faint of heart, and Walton demonstrated that himself. Walton committed to Mississippi State two weeks ago. Two days later, he de-committed.

What brought Walton around to Georgia? Norton Hurd VI, the program director for Team Thad – Walton’s club team – told 247Sports, “He loves the state of Georgia and felt like a priority from day one with the new staff.”

With one de-commitment under his belt, Dawg fans will sleep light wondering if Walton will stick with Georgia.

At 59 with a bullet

Walton is a versatile 6’6” guard who began the summer under the radar as an unranked prospect. He rocketed to a number 59 national ranking and number two Alabama ranking after averaging 17.1 points per game for Team Thad in the Under Armour summer league. He also averaged 19.1 points a night during his junior year at Carver High School.

Walton is the third Georgia basketball commitment for Crean. The other two commitments, Tye Fagan and Ignas Sargiunas, both enrolled as part of the 2018 Georgia freshman class.

Sturdivant could be the third player from Norcross High on the Georgia roster.

Make it through the night

Crean’s second reported commitment did not last through the morning.

Sturdivant committed to Georgia Monday night. In the morning he had a change of heart.  He ranks 139 nationally for 2019 and is the ninth-best prospect from the state of Georgia.

Sturdivant had Georgia basketball on his mind last night, and could still end up a Dawg. His addition would temporarily give Georgia a top ten 2019 recruiting ranking.

If he returns to the Georgia camp, Sturdivant could be the third player from Norcross High on the Georgia roster when he arrives. Bulldog sophomore Rayshaun Hammonds, and freshman JoJo Toppin both played for Norcross head coach Jesse McMillan.
