LSU football: week three review – Auburn
Special Teams
Winner of the “Hero of the Night” award, Cole Tracy continues to prove why he was worth his one year scholarship. Tracy shows the calm poise of a 20 year NFL veteran every time he takes the field. With the lights at their brightest and the crowd at their loudest, Tracy booted the game winning 42 yard field goal right down the middle. It also deserves mentioning that he buried two other field goals and his only extra point attempt.
What more can we say about this revamped LSU kicking game? Avery Atkins consistently boots balls out of the end zone, something LSU fans are not accustomed to seeing. Zach Von Rosenberg averaged an astounding 52.8 yards per punt.
An unsung hero on this LSU football team, Jonathan Giles has shown that he can be a sure hand back to return punts. An area of concern for the 2017 LSU Tigers, not catching punts and having them result in negative yards was something that cost LSU valuable field position in years past. Giles has shown the courage and talent able to handle such an important position.
Overall
It didn’t look pretty at times. There were plenty of mistakes and plenty of things to clean up going into practice this week. But this LSU football team displays a confidence and a poise that has been lacking for years. This LSU team has the moxie to go into any stadium against any opponent and beat them. LSU managed to make more plays than Auburn and came away victorious.
With such games in their history as the 1988 Earthquake Game, the 1996 Barn Burner, the 2004 second chance extra point game , the 2005 5 missed field goal game, and the 2007 Demetrius Byrd last second TD game, the LSU-Auburn rivalry never fails to amaze. This game will live on forever in SEC lore, and it will be one we look back on for years to come.
