Is Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart innovating around a pass rush deficient Bulldog defense or reinventing modern pass defense? Either way, so far it’s working. Will it work Saturday against Missouri?

Saturday, the Georgia football team faces Missouri, the fourth ranked passing team in the country, and Drew Lock, the sixth ranked quarterback. To counter the vertical Missouri passing game, the Dawgs will bring to bear the worst pass rush in the country.

Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart’s sack-deficient defense is a sore point for fans and pundits. About the Bulldog’s no sack effort Saturday, he said, “Everybody wants sacks, everybody wants pass rush.”

And then this. “I don’t know that we could have gotten to [middle Tennessee quarterback Brent Stockstill], so we better defend the pass.”

Georgia football key to success

And that’s the secret to the Bulldog’s defensive success so far in this young season. The Dawgs can defend.

Georgia football ranks 17 nationally in yards per pass at 5.3, and third in yards per completion with 8.1. The Dawgs in fact rank 11 nationally in scoring defense despite ranking last in sacks per game.
