Will Bennett ring that Chapel Bell for Georgia football?

Bennett gave up a near lock at three years starting under center at a good football school, Louisiana-Lafayette, to be a near lock as the perennial backup at the University of Georgia.

Is Bennett returning only with backup aspirations? It doesn’t seem likely, and don’t bet against him.

Bennett came to Georgia a 2-star recruit from a small south Georgia high school. He left as a scout team wonder boy. He returns as the top quarterback recruit of a mid-level college football program.

It’s doubtful this is all Bennett has in mind.

Thoroughbred football bloodlines

Bennett’s granddaddy, Richard “Buddy” Bennett, not only played quarterback at South Carolina, he coached at East Tennessee State University and beat Terry Bradshaw in the Grantland Rice Bowl before moving on to coach Tennessee defensive backs.

There’s a good chance young Bennett not only has ambition and drive, there’s a good chance he understands how to keep the ball out of defenders hands. Granddaddy Buddy Bennett’s defense at ETSU swiped 37 passes in 1969 and his University of Tennessee secondary picked off 36 the next year. (Buddy Bennett went on to coach at Arkansas, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech before returning to coach in South Georgia high schools.)

Glory! Glory!

Stetson Bennett has three years of eligibility left. Considering what he has accomplished in two years, not to mention his breeding, anything is possible. After all, Bulldog fans have already seen this Jake Fromm kid dismiss two national number one quarterback recruits in two years.

dark. Next. Georgia recruiting wipes out Tide fans

Either way, for both this second generation Bulldog and the fans that cheer the Red and Black, Bennett’s return to Athens Town is 2019’s first Glory! Glory! moment, and if it doesn’t make your skin tingle, turn in your Bulldog Card.
