The state of Florida football’s non-conference scheduling
By Nick Knudsen
Southern Cal
- percent of non-conference games played in home state since 1980: 56.2%
- number of states traveled to since 1980: 23
- Power Five non-conference games in the playoff era (since 2014): 9
- Power Five non-conference road games in the playoff era (since 2014): 5
- number of home-and-home series with different BCS/Power Five opponents (since 1998): 12
If any team has an excuse to tone down the rest of their non-conference schedule, it’s USC. The Trojans play a home-and-home with Notre Dame on an annual basis, but Southern Cal has also scheduled the likes of Texas, Ohio State, Alabama, Boston College, Syracuse, and Virginia over the last ten years and locked in another future date with Alabama.
It’s time for Florida football to branch out of the southeast and go win some hearts and minds by spreading the Gator Gospel across the U.S. of A.
Scott Stricklin, if this makes it to you, please, please schedule some interesting Power Five home-and-homes for the sake of the fans. Here’s an early wish list:
- Oregon
- Penn State
- Oklahoma
- Clemson
- Washington
- Wisconsin
- West Virginia
- Texas
- UCLA
- Ohio State
- Virginia Tech
- USC
- Two-for-one series with UCF to replace the FCS game
UCF…take the deal!
