Georgia Names Charlton Warren Defensive Backs Coach
Head coach Kirby Smart has finally decided on who his new defensive backs coach will be. Georgia announced that Charlton Warren received the position after taking on the same role at Florida last season.
Warren is a native of Atlanta, Georgia and played defensive back at Air Force. He coached at Tennessee during the 2017 season as the Volunteers defensive backs and special teams coordinator. Warren also spent time at North Carolina from 2015-16, Nebraska in 2014 and Air Force from 2005 to 2013 in a variety of roles.
“Charlton is from Atlanta and has a wide range of experience coaching defensive football at several universities and conferences around the country,” Kirby Smart said in a Georgia Sports Communication announcement. “His entire coaching career has been on the defensive side of the ball and especially defensive backs. He has developed an outstanding record and reputation in the coaching profession, and he’ll bring great knowledge and energy to our staff.”
While at Florida, the Gators finished No. 3 in the SEC in passing yards allowed. At Tennessee, Warren’s defense finished No. 1 in the SEC in passing yards per game with 161.7. In 2016, under Warren’s watch, the Tar Heels ranked as the 10th best pass defense in the country allowing only 180.8 yards through the air.
He impresses on the field and off the field as well with his recruiting skills. In the 2018 class, he is credited with helping the Gators sign defensive back, Trey Dean.
As for the 2019 class, he was the primary recruiter for defensive backs Jaydon Hill, Chester Kimbrough, and Chris Steele.
Warren was brought on to replace Mel Tucker, who accepted the head coaching job at Colorado in December. He graduated from Air Force in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in Human Factors Engineering and earned his MBA from Georgia College and State University in 2003.
Warren is married to Jocelyn Warren, and the two have three children: Jayree, Teya and Chase.
