Kentucky Basketball: Tyler Herro Receives SEC Freshman Honors
Tyler Herro was named SEC Freshman of the week after his impressive performances against Georgia and Auburn this past week.
The 6-5 195 pound freshman from Milwaukee, Wisconsin averaged 16 points, five rebounds and four assists in last weeks two games.
At then ranked No. 14 Auburn he scored 20 points, including 15 in the second half. He shot 6-12 from the floor and made 3-6 from the arch. Herro sunk two critical free throws in that game to give the Wildcats the 81-89 lead with 25 seconds to play. This win was the first road victory over a top-15 team in the SEC since March 1, 2006.
He scored a respectable 12 points against Georgia and had seven rebounds and four assists in the game. He shot 4-10 from the floor and missed both three-pointers he attempted. However, that didn’t matter because Kentucky ended up stomping the Bulldogs 69-49.
Herro has come in clutch for Kentucky in multiple road games this season. He averages 17 points a game along with making 51.1 percent of his shots.
He has started in all 17 of the games, averaging 13.5 points a game and has been a key contributor this season for Kentucky. According to Kentucky’s website, the freshman is yet another Kentucky Wildcat to win the SEC Freshman of the Week honors.
Keldon Johnson and Ashton Hagans each have won the honor twice this season as well. The Kentucky article states that the Wildcats have won more weekly SEC honors at 95 than any other school during the Calipari era. Of those 95 honors, 77 of them were SEC Freshman of the Week awards.
Herro has received the award twice this season. Kentucky has won SEC Freshman of the Week honors five of the last six weeks.
The Wildcats next game will be Tuesday as they take on Mississippi State at 7 p.m. on ESPN for another Super Tuesday matchup.
