SEC football: Top Five players in 2019 NFL Conference Championships
Eric Berry proved to be a key element for the Chiefs defense. He recorded six overall tackles, five solo, and one assist.
Of those six takedowns, four of them were against Patriots running back Sony Michel. Which as a defensive back isn’t good when you have to tackle the running back.
He has been one of the Chiefs leaders on the defense since arriving, and Sunday proved no differently. The Tennessee alumni came up big a few times in Sunday’s game.
Berry was the defensive back that got the privilege of taking on, Patriots tight end, Rob Gronkowski all game. In regulation when the Patriots made a drive down the field with under two minutes to go, he took on Gronkowski one-on-one for the first time.
Gronkowski caught the 25-yard pass, but Berry made sure to keep him out of the end zone and make New England work for it a little harder.
The next one-on-one matchup for Berry came against Gronkowski again, but this time in overtime in a similar fashion as the first.
However, give Berry credit, despite Gronkowski making the catch, he made sure to tackle him before scoring. Berry gave the Chiefs another chance, but they couldn’t hang on as three plays later Rex Burkhead scored the winning touchdown.
