National Signing Day 2019: Ranking the 6 Best SEC Football Classes

LSU lands at the No. 6 spot in the top SEC classes.  As for 247Sports team rankings, the Tigers rank No. 5 overall and No. 4 in the SEC.

Despite having one of the top four schools on 247Sports, LSU missed the mark.

Coach Orgeron and his staff signed 25 players in the 2019 cycle.

That list includes three 5-stars, 11 4-stars, and 10 3-stars.

The biggest reason that LSU is six on my list, Ishmael Sopsher, a four-star defensive tackle that trended the Tigers for as long as I can remember. However, Alabama’s Nick Saban plucked him out of Louisiana.

LSU desperately needed defensive line guys and signed four of them. The Tigers needed one more to really solidify the defensive line class, and they missed out on one of the most significant prospects in their backyard.

According to Our Lads, LSU’s depth chart has two young guys at the defensive tackle position, so Sopsher could have competed and started right away if he chose his hometown school.

Yet he didn’t. This loss is enormous and will hurt the Tigers in the long run. If Orgeron wants to defeat Alabama, he must get guys like Sopsher on his team.

Outside of losing Sopsher, the Tigers class was quite impressive. LSU kept home 5-star cornerback Dereck Stingley who seemed to have every school in the country pushing for him.

The Tigers know how to sign defensive backs, and the 2019 class is no different. LSU also got a sleeper in the quarterback department with Peter Parrish.

2019 was a good year for running backs for the Tigers as well. Stealing 5-star John Emery Jr. from Georgia really helped Orgeron in this class. If he had lost Emery Jr. that wouldn’t have been good for him and another prominent loss.

LSU ended up sixth on this list because it did what it was supposed to but lost out on a  hometown target they needed on their team. That loss was really the only one for them, so they sit here at No. 6.
