LSU football: 2018 Season High and Low Points
By Nick Knudsen
High Point: Won 36-16 vs. Georgia (Game 7, October 13, 2018)
A week after a tough loss to the Gators, #13 LSU football came home and dominated #2 Georgia.
The 36-16 win put LSU on the inside track for a playoff spot and signified Coach O’s biggest victory in his tenure at the helm of the Tigers.
After Burrow failed to lead the offense to a first down in a three and out opening drive, the LSU offense went on a tear and allowed the Tigers to play from ahead for the entire afternoon:
- Drive #2: 9 plays, 65 yards, 2:17 – Field Goal (LSU 3-0, 9:32 1st quarter)
- Drive #3: 12 plays, 84 yards, 4:54 – Touchdown, highlighted by a 47-yard burst from RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (LSU 10-0, 13:34 2nd quarter)
- Drive #4: 5 plays, 53 yards, 1:18 – Field Goal, opened with a 50-yard strike from Burrow to WR Justin Jefferson (LSU 13-0, 11:22 2nd quarter)
- Drive #5: 15 plays, 50 yards, 4:43 – Field Goal, two 4th &1 conversions prolonged this drive (LSU 16-0, 5:09 2nd quarter)
Georgia forced a 47-yard Tigers punt on the sixth drive to stop the bleeding and headed into the locker room down only 16-0.
The Bulldogs were able to get on the board on the first drive in the second half with a 40-yard field goal from Rodrigo Blankenship.
But LSU football stole three points right back as QB Jake Fromm was picked off deep in Georgia territory on the next drive allowing the Tigers to tack on another field goal to go up 19-3.
Junior running back Elijah Holyfield scored the first Georgia touchdown on the day with 0:07 left in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs’ two-point conversion attempt failed, but there was hope for a comeback as the lead had been cut to 19-9 heading into the fourth quarter.
Each team traded punts before LSU found the end zone again with a six-play, 86-yard drive that was highlighted by another big Burrow to Jefferson connection.
On the following kick off, Georgia fumbled, LSU recovered and added another Cole Tracy field goal, which gave the Tigers a commanding 29-9 lead with 7:20 left in the game.
Fromm marched the Bulldogs down the field and capped off a 1:20 drive with a 35-yard completion to Riley Ridley and a 27-yard strike to Ridley in the end zone on the next play.
Those two plays brought Georgia back within two scores 29-16 with 6:00 remaining, but it was too little, too late.
Burrow’s 59-yard run on the next drive put LSU football in a position to punch in a 4-yard run by RB Nick Brossette and seal the upset 36-16 victory for the Tigers.
Two key stats behind the Tigers’ high point of 2018:
- The LSU defense recovered two fumbles and picked off two Jake Fromm passes while not turning the ball over once.
- Georgia’s dominant running game was also held to 113 yards on 30 carries. LSU football recorded 275 yards on 51 carries.
