Cable wakes up the bats

Talley again figured prominently in spinning Sunday’s outcome in the Bulldogs favor, but in a less conventional fashion.

Through two and two-thirds innings, Sunday’s game shaped up into another defensive affair when with two outs, Georgia’s Riley King slapped a single to right and Schunk bounced a single through the left side. When left fielder Daniel Cabrera booted the easy pickup on Schunk’s single, the Bulldog base runners scampered into second and third.

Clean up hitter LJ Talley then took a ball to begin his at bat. With the Bulldog left-handed hitter now ahead in the count, LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri sent Talley to first base on an intentional walk. The move brought another left-handed slugger, this one designated hitter John Cable, to face right-handed LSU starter Eric Walker.  Cable, a six-foot two-inch 230-pound graduate student, took offense at the choice.

Give no lip to big John

Big John Cable came to Athens by way of New Orleans University. He’s kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip, and his crashin’ blow launched the first pitch high and deep to the right field promised land. After flipping his bat and Clydesdale-ling around third, he stared down the LSU dugout on his way home – ya didn’t give no lip to Big John.

The grand slam gave Georgia a 4 – 0 lead and control of the game.

The Tiger bats got hot in the last three innings and scored seven runs, but the Bulldogs responded with sterling defense, including an at-the-wall bring-it back-catch by freshman left fielder Randon Jernigan. The Dawgs then got five more runs of their own to secure the 9 – 7 win.
