A Quick Look at the 2019 Mississippi State Football Schedule

Expect the Bulldogs to jump out to a fast start in 2019.

Mississippi State football opens the season in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome against UL Lafayette. The Rajin’ Cajuns could be a pesky out to kick off the season, but I expect State to roll in this one.

The Bulldogs will then welcome three visitors to Davis Wade Stadium: Southern Miss, a Kansas State team with a first-year head coach, and a Benny Snell-less Kentucky team that will have Mississippi State’s full attention after last season’s 28-7 debacle in Lexington.

It would not be far fetched to see the Bulldogs jump out to a 4-0 start.

The next four games will end up defining the 2019 Mississippi State football season:

  • at Auburn – the Bulldogs have only won at Jordan-Hare twice since 2000
  • at Tennessee – an improving Vols team should be a tougher out in 2019
  • vs LSU – the Bulldogs have only beaten LSU five times since 1985
  • at Texas A&M – Clemson was the only team to defeat the Aggies in College Station in 2018

If Mississippi State football can exit this stretch with only one loss, they will likely take care of a road trip to Arkansas before entering into a bye week to prep for what could be a showdown with Alabama. The Tide barely escaped an upset in their last trip to Starkville. If the offense is rolling and the cowbells are ringing just right, this could be a big moment for Mississippi State.

Moorhead and company end the season with an FCS game against Abilene Christian and will host Ole Miss for the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving.

Mississippi State may take a step back on the defensive side of the ball in 2019, however, the offense should improve. The level of offensive improvement will dictate how the 2019 season plays out for the Bulldogs in Year 2 of the Joe Moorhead Era in Starkville.
