SEC football: Ranking top 5 quarterbacks heading into 2020
By Ty Butler
A wave of disappointment fell on the Georgia fanbase after learning that Jake Fromm, the fourth leading passer in all of the SEC, declared for the NFL Draft.
But it only took a couple of days for Jamie Newman to reignite Athens after deciding to leave the Demon Deacons and head to the University of Georgia.
The quarterback managed to finish fifth in passing for the entire ACC conference in 2019.
And while Newman is a competent passer, his ability to take off and pick up yardage with his legs happens to be what sets him apart from others.
His 6’4 230 pound physique moves well despite carrying around such a large stature. This proved to be true after Newman bailed out the Wake Forest offense with crucial runs in 2019.
Despite losing key players, the Georgia offense should reload once again with the help of a deep depth of running backs and one of the best offensive line units in the SEC.
Throughout the years, the Georgia fanbase has begged Smart to open up the offense and modernize the way the offense was ran. It’s been one of the only complaints during his tenure with the Bulldogs.
With the addition of Jamie Newman, Kirby should deliver on the promise that has been left unfulfilled for the past few seasons.
Now with Newman running the offense, Smart will use an abundance of RPOs and swing passes to spread the field and cause confusion amongst opposing defenses. When you get a guy like Newman, it allows you to try new things.
His athleticism and awareness opens up new possibilities and lets you get away with things that wouldn’t fly otherwise.
We can expect for Newman to be one of the top quarterback prospects in the SEC on one of the best teams in the SEC.
