Kentucky Wildcats fire cheer coaches amid hazing scandal

There’s a lot of chatter going on in Lexington, Kentucky- and not the good kind. Today, four Kentucky Wildcats cheerleading coaches were fired following hazing scandal.
The Kentucky Wildcats cheer program has become the center of attention in the world of sports. And it’s not because they added to their 24 national championships, and it’s not because of good deeds.
In fact, four coaches were fired from their position after word got out that the squad was chucking topless and bottomless cheerleaders into a lake. Yes, you read that right- let me explain.
During a summer trip to Tennessee, the Kentucky cheer team decided to take a detour to a lake. And on that trip, alcohol was being consumed and girls were being thrown.
As a result, a couple of cheerleaders actually had to seek medical attention due to binge drinking. Reports say that the coaches never confiscated the alcohol or showed any interest in stopping the girls.
Team members were also instructed to chant lewd comments without bottoms on- all of this happened with coaches in plain sight.
Granted, I understand that college students are notorious for drinking and partying. Heck, we’ve all been there at one time or another.
But at what point does alcohol poisoning and forced commando stop being fun?
It’s pretty hard to fathom that the coaches were aware of what was going on and never stepped in. One of the main priorities of being a collegiate coach is to ensure that all of your student-athletes are safe.
And if I’m a cheer parent, I’m definitely second-guessing my daughter’s commitment to the University of Kentucky.
To make things even more odd, the investigation actually caused a long-time University attorney to retire from his job.
Now, I’m not necessarily sure what’s going on in Lexington, but they better get things figured out real quick. This seems like a pretty messy situation that involves multiple layers.
As a result from all of this, the Kentucky athletic department will now be in complete control of the cheerleading team and are working around the clock to find a replacement.
The good news is, the coaches have been fired and it shouldn’t be too hard to find candidates. Kentucky’s program has been at the top of collegiate cheer for quite some time now.
Let’s just hope that the next man (or woman) up will spend a little more time being aware. After all, that’s kind of your entire role as a coach.
