Auburn Football: Recapping the 2022 transfer portal additions so far
By Matt Melton
Coming off a 6-7 season in year one under head coach Bryan Harsin, Auburn Football has had one of the more-interesting offseason’s of any SEC team so far.
A program that has seen multiple players transfer across the past couple of weeks and months, the Tigers however have also added a few notable transfers as well, some of which will likely make an immediate impact in 2022.
Recapping Auburn Football’s 2022 transfer portal additions so far
Zach Calzada
The first of two quarterback transfer additions for Auburn Football so far this offseason, Calzada comes to Auburn after appearing in 12 games last season as Texas A&M’s starting quarterback, completing 56.3% of his passes for 2,185 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Calzada could potentially start at quarterback for the Tigers in 2022, depending on the offseason competition at the position.
Jayson Jones
While 2021 starting quarterback Bo Nix transferred to Oregon, a few of the Ducks players from last season also transferred to Auburn with arguably the most-notable being Jones, a former four-star in-state prospect who spent the last two seasons in Eugene. After collecting 19 tackles and 1.5 sacks a year ago, Jones should play a key role along the Tigers defensive front in 2022, potentially in a starting role.
Eugene Asante
A former four-star prospect, Asante has spent the last three seasons at North Carolina where the linebacker amassed a combined 58 tackles. For an Auburn team that will have to replace an impactful player in Zakoby McClain next season, Asante could make an immediate impact in 2022, potentially as a starter.
DJ James
A former in-state prospect out of high school, James has spent the last three seasons at Oregon, and is coming off a breakout 2021 season in which he collected 46 tackles and 4 PD’s across 12 games. Similar to Asante previously, James could make an immediate impact for the Tigers in 2022, potentially starting at corner.
Robby Ashford
The former four-star never appeared in a game at Oregon the past two seasons, but did see time with the Ducks baseball team in 2021 appearing in 20 games. Ashford is another name to watch for in the Tigers offseason quarterback competition alongside the previously mentioned Calzada, as well as the returning TJ Finley, Dematrius Davis, and incoming freshman Holden Geriner.
