After an action-packed week in Tampa at the 2022 SEC Tournament, we are finally set to decide a champion on Sunday afternoon when Tennessee and Texas A&M meet for the second time this season. With Tennessee having won the previous matchup 90-80 in Knoxville, this is likely to be a much-closer, low-scoring contest between two of the hottest teams in the conference.

Starting with Texas A&M, you won’t find a bigger winner over the last week in the SEC, if not college basketball overall, than the Aggies. Now owning a 23-11 record for the year, the Aggies have won three-straight in Tampa over Georgia, top-seeded Auburn, and most-recently Arkansas to reach the SEC Tournament title game, and have almost secured their spot in the NCAA Tournament in the process.

The Aggies seventh-straight win, Texas A&M shot an impressive 53% from three in their dominant 82-64 win over Arkansas, as well as received double-digit scoring from Quenton Jackson, Hassan Diarra, Tyrece Radford, and Henry Coleman III. For one of the SEC’s top defensive teams, the Aggies also average an impressive 73.2 PPG on a combined 33.5% shooting from three, and will use a few other guards alongside the group mentioned previously such as Wade Taylor IV, Marcus Williams, and Andre Gordon.

Tennessee on the other hand has won six consecutive games dating back to the regular season, and could potentially be closing in on a two-seed in the NCAA Tournament with a win on Sunday. Having posted back-to-back impressive wins over Mississippi State and Kentucky the past two days, the Volunteers in particular led for almost all of the contest against the Wildcats, while also shooting 6-for-15 from three.

One of the top defensive teams in the entire country (rank third nationally in defensive efficiency according to KenPom), the Volunteers allow only 63.2 PPG to opponents, while also averaging 73.6 PPG on 35.5% shooting from three. Led by the All-SEC guard duo of Kennedy Chandler and Santiago Vescovi, the Volunteers have also gotten strong play in Tampa from guard Zakai Zeigler and forward Josiah-Jordan James, as well as freshman center Brandon Huntley-Hatfield.

Tennessee vs Texas A&M 2022 SEC Tournament Championship Prediction

Still in the “First Four Out” category according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi entering Sunday, Texas A&M would not have to worry if they will make the NCAA Tournament or not if the Aggies simply win this game. If they lose however, the Aggies are likely going into Sunday night’s selection show not 100% sure if they will go dancing this year or not.

So yes, this game is not only for an SEC Tournament title, but it could also make-or-break the Aggies NCAA Tournament hopes. Expect a close, low-scoring contest between the Volunteers and Aggies on Sunday afternoon, and while Texas A&M will likely keep it close, I’ll say that Tennessee wins the 2022 SEC Tournament title. Prediction: Tennessee 72, Texas A&M 68
