According to a report from Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports on Saturday afternoon, LSU Basketball has parted ways with head coach Will Wade.

LSU Basketball parts ways with head coach Will Wade

With Selection Sunday looming tomorrow, as well as the NCAA Tournament next week, this news comes a week after the Tigers received a notice of allegations for the basketball and football programs from the NCAA, as well as the day after LSU was knocked out of the SEC Tournament, falling to four-seed Arkansas 79-67.

According to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman as well, the decision was made that the violations were too severe to keep Wade.

Coming to Baton Rouge back in 2017-18 off two back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament at VCU, LSU held a combined record of 108-53 in five seasons under Wade. Included in that span was the 2018-19 SEC regular season championship with a 16-2 record in conference play (28-7 overall), as well as two NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Tigers deepest run into the NCAA Tournament came during that 2018-19 season when LSU reached the Sweet 16, and finished the season ranked No. 12 in the country. The other NCAA Tournament appearance for the Tigers came a year ago when LSU reached the Round of 32.

As Rothstein mentioned previously as well, assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Kevin Nickelberry will serve as the interim coach for the Tigers in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Nickelberry, currently in his third season in Baton Rouge, has been an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the Tigers each of the past two seasons.

Prior to the last two seasons, Nickelberry served as the assistant to Wade during his first season at LSU back in 2019-20.

A likely five-or-six seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, LSU currently holds a 22-11 overall record during the 2021-22 season, and went 9-9 in conference play. As mentioned previously, the Tigers lost in the SEC Tournament on Friday afternoon, and are awaiting their NCAA Tournament opponent tomorrow.
