After falling off the bubble with a second round loss in the SEC Tournament, Florida will now play in the 2022 NIT Tournament with the Gators hosting one of the MAAC’s top teams in the first round, the Iona Gaels.

Owning a 19-13 record for the year, Florida as mentioned previously was firmly on the bubble going into last weeks SEC Tournament, but the Gators fell out of NCAA Tournament contention with an 83-80 loss to Texas A&M in the second round. With head coach Mike White having since been named the new head coach at Georgia, the Gators now enter the 2022 NIT Tournament as an intriguing team to watch for.

Led by one of the top players in the 2022 NIT Tournament in Colin Castleton, Florida won’t necessarily blow you away offensively, but do have some impressive pieces led by the guard trio of Phlandrous Fleming Jr, Tyree Appleby, and Myreon Jones. In addition to that, the Gators also have the pieces defensively to give teams trouble at times on offense with Castleton inside, as well others such as Brandon McKissic on the perimeter.

The top team in the MAAC during the regular season at 17-3 in conference play, Iona enters the 2022 NIT Tournament with a 25-7 overall record for the year, but were upset by Rider 71-70 in the quarterfinal round of the MAAC Tournament, ending the Gaels NCAA Tournament hopes. Led by head coach Rick Pitino, the Gaels have however added a few wins this year over NCAA Tournament teams, a group that includes Alabama, Delaware, and Saint Peter’s.

An impressive offensive team that averages 75.3 PPG, Iona are led by leading-scorer Tyson Jolly, as well as star forward Nelly Junior Joseph who averages 12.9 PPG, 8.1 RPG, and 2 BPG. In addition to those two, guard Elijah Joiner also averages in double-figures, while forwards Quinn Slazinski and Dylan van Eyck are also both impact scorers in the frontcourt.
