After making a run to the NIT Tournament championship game last season, Mississippi State returns to the NIT this year, opening play on Wednesday night against the Virginia Cavaliers.

Owning an 18-15 overall record for the year, Mississippi State is coming off a quarterfinal round appearance in the SEC Tournament where the Bulldogs lost to eventual champion Tennessee 72-59. Going a combined 9-11 in SEC play (regular and postseason), the Bulldogs however now travel for the 2022 NIT Tournament, where Mississippi State has struggled mightily away from home this season owning a 1-9 record.

A team that averages 70.9 PPG for the year while only allowing 66.4, the Bulldogs will have arguably the best player on the court in this matchup in star guard Iverson Molinar, as well as North Carolina transfer Garrison Brooks who has experience playing against the Cavaliers. Alongside Brooks in the frontcourt will be Tolu Smith who averages an impressive 14.1 PPG and 6.3 RPG, while DJ Jeffries and Shakeel Moore will also be impact scorers for the Bulldogs.

Virginia on the other hand also lost in quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament when the Cavaliers fell to North Carolina 63-43. Owning a 19-13 overall record for the year, the Cavaliers went a combined 13-9 in ACC play (regular and postseason), and are one of the ACC’s top defensive teams allowing only 60.2 PPG to opponents this season.

While Virginia does shoot a combined 44.9% from the field, the Cavaliers only average 62.6 PPG offensively, and are led by forward Jayden Gardner who averages 15.3 PPG and 6.6 RPG. Kadin Shedrick also sees significant minutes alongside Gardner, while a majority of Virginia’s backcourt production comes from the trio of Kihei Clark, Armaan Franklin, and Reece Beekman.
