One of the more-intriguing matchups in the first round of the West Region, Arkansas takes on American East conference champion Vermont on Thursday night.

One of the SEC’s top teams, Arkansas enters the 2022 NCAA Tournament with a 25-8 overall record for the year, as well as having gone 13-5 in SEC play to finish fourth in the conference for the regular season before falling in the SEC Tournament semifinal round to Texas A&M. Coming off an exciting run in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, a few of those key names are back for the Razorbacks once again, almost all of which are key contributors for one of the SEC’s top offensive teams averaging 76.9 PPG.

Included in that group is leading scorer JD Notae (18.4 PPG) and one of the conference’s best rebounders Jaylin Williams (10.5 PPG, 9.6 RPG), as well as versatile guard Davonte Davis. Also a solid team defensively allowing only 68.5 PPG to opponents, versatile forwards Stanley Umude and Au’Diese Toney play key roles both ways, while others such as Chris Lykes and Trey Wade will also see time off the Arkansas bench.

The champions of the American East, Vermont is a dangerous team entering the 2022 NCAA Tournament as a 13-seed having won eight straight, as well as only suffered one loss since December 7 (February 14 at Hartford). Owning a 28-5 record for the year, the Catamounts dominated conference play going 17-1, partly due to a very-experienced team, one that averages an impressive 74.9 PPG while allowing 60.3.

For a team that shoots an impressive 49.3% from the field and 36.4% from three, Vermont is led by two impact scorers in Ryan Davis and Ben Shungu, both of which average 16+ PPG and shoot 40+% from three. Aaron Deloney, Justin Mazzulla, Finn Sullivan, Kameron Gibson, and Robin Duncan could all see time in the backcourt, while Isaiah Powell and Nick Foirillo will see time in the frontcourt.

Arkansas vs Vermont 2022 NCAA Tournament Prediction

While Arkansas should be considered the favorite going in, this a very-dangerous Vermont team, one that has the pieces to potentially upset the Razorbacks. I’ll pick Arkansas to win by anywhere from 5-10 points however, likely pulling away late in a game that should be close early into the second half. Prediction: Arkansas 76, Vermont 68
