The 2022 SEC Tournament champions, the Tennessee Volunteers begin their run in the 2022 NCAA Tournament with a first round matchup in the South Region against the Longwood Lancers.

One of the SEC’s top teams, Tennessee as mentioned previously is coming off an impressive run in Tampa, one where the Volunteers defeated Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Texas A&M to win the 2022 SEC Tournament. Bringing the Volunteers record to 26-7 for the year, Tennessee also held a 17-4 overall record in SEC play (regular and postseason), and enters the Big Dance as a three-seed.

One of the nation’s elite defensive teams (ranked No. 3 in KenPom), Tennessee allows only 62.8 PPG to opponents, and are led by two All-SEC selections in guards Santiago Vescovi and Kennedy Chandler, both of which are strong three-point shooters. Joining those two for a Volunteers team that averages 73.2 PPG is guard Zakai Zeigler, while Josiah-Jordan James, John Fulkerson, Uros Plavsic, and Brandon Huntley-Hatfield compose an impressive frontcourt.

Longwood on the other hand enter the 2022 NCAA Tournament as a 14-seed, and as the champions of the Big South. Owning a 26-6 overall record for the year, the Lancers sat atop the Big South-North in regular season play at 15-1, and enter the Big Dance having won their last eight consecutive games.

An impressive offensive team averaging 76.3 PPG, the Lancers are led by a trio of double-digit scoring guards in Justin Hill, Isaiah Wilkins, and DeShaun Wade, each of which are strong three-point shooters (Longwood shoots a combined 38% from three). Experienced forwards Leslie Nkereuwem and Zac Watson lead the Longwood frontcourt, while the Lancers bench consists primarily of Nate Lliteras, D’Avian Houston, Jordan Perkins, and Jesper Granlund.

Tennessee vs Longwood 2022 NCAA Tournament Prediction

On paper, this a game that Tennessee should certainly win, and the Volunteers will likely be considered as a big favorite because of it. While the Lancers three-point shooting could give the SEC Tournament champions trouble at times, expect Tennessee’s defense to be the difference maker, and for the Volunteers to win by at-least 10-15 points. Prediction: Tennessee 76, Longwood 62
