After surviving a first round scare on Thursday night, Arkansas advances to the Round of 32 in the 2022 NCAA Tournament to take on the 12-seed New Mexico State Aggies.

As mentioned previously, Arkansas won a close contest in the first round on Thursday night as the Razorbacks defeated 13-seed Vermont 75-71. A game that was close late, this win for the Razorbacks extended Arkansas’ overall record to 26-8 for the year, as well as marked their seventh win across their last nine games.

Arkansas had four players scoring in double-figures against the Catamounts led by Stanley Umude with 21 points, as well as others such as JD Notae, Jaylin Williams, and Davonte Davis to lead a team that averages an impressive 76.9 PPG for the year. Forwards Au’Diese Toney and Trey Wade also saw a significant number of minutes in the first round, while guard Chris Lykes also saw time off the Razorbacks bench.

New Mexico State on the other hand picked up one of the multiple upsets in the first round, as the Aggies upset five-seed UConn 70-63. The champions of the WAC and a 12-seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament, the win brought New Mexico State’s overall record for the year to 27-6, as well as being the Aggies seventh win across their last nine games.

Averaging 73.2 PPG for the year while allowing 65 PPG, the Aggies received a phenomenal 37-point performance from leading scorer Teddy Allen against the Huskies, while the starting five of Allen, Sir’Jabari Rice, Johnny McCants, Will McNair Jr, and Clayton Henry all saw a significant number of minutes. Guard Mario McKinney Jr was the Aggies primary option off the bench, while forwards Yuat Alok and Mike Peake also saw time.

New Mexico State has one of the most-talented scorers left in the NCAA Tournament in Allen, and are certainly capable of pulling off yet another upset here in the second round.
