Auburn Basketball: Way-too-early roster outlook for 2022-23 season
By Matt Melton
The 2021-22 SEC regular season champions, one of the best overall seasons in Auburn Basketball program history shockingly came to an end Sunday night when the Tigers were upset by 10-seed Miami in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
With a few notable names from this 2021-22 Tigers team now potentially set to move on to the next level, Auburn Basketball enters an interesting offseason when it comes to the roster. Likely to see at-least some roster turnover, the Tigers will however return a few key names as well, some of which will be among the top players at their position in the SEC.
Here is a way-too-early look at Auburn Basketball’s roster for the 2022-23 season, one that will likely be one of the most talented in the SEC once again.
Way-too-early Auburn Basketball roster outlook for 2022-23 season
Likely Gone to NBA/Graduation
- F Jabari Smith
The 2021-22 SEC Freshman of the Year, Smith is a lock to go in the Top 5 picks off the 2022 NBA Draft, as well as a potential candidate to No. 1 overall. Replacing the production of Smith will be key for the Tigers overall success next season, but it will not be an easy thing to do by any means.
Decisions to Watch For
- C Walker Kessler
- G Allen Flanigan
The 2021-22 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, Kessler is an interesting draft decision to watch for, with some mock drafts having the 7-foot-1 center as a late-first or early-second round pick. As for Flanigan, the guard could’ve entered the NBA Draft a year ago, and will likely test the draft waters once again.
Set to Return
- G KD Johnson
- G Wendell Green Jr
- F Jaylin Williams
- G Devan Cambridge
- G Zep Jasper
- F Dylan Cardwell
- G Lior Berman
- F Chris Moore
- F Babatunde Akingbola
Auburn is set to return essentially all of the production in their backcourt, headlined by two double-digit scorers in Johnson and Green. Included in this group currently set to return for the Tigers in 2022-23 are also two experienced options in Williams and Cambridge, each of which were primary starters for Auburn two years ago.
New Additions
- F Chance Westry
- G Tre Donaldson
Auburn Basketball is set to add two players from their 2022 recruiting class, one that is rated No. 7 in the SEC. Westry is a highly-rated four-star prospect who has the potential to play either the two-or-three next season at Auburn, while Donaldson will likely see time next season at the point guard position.
