If you were to simply ask a college football fan to list the potential 2022 Heisman Trophy candidates from Alabama Football, odds are that you will likely hear two names in return – Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr.

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner, as well as a name that should’ve certainly been a finalist a year ago, both Young and Anderson return for their junior seasons in 2022, with both expected to be among the names in contention for the award this season.

However, what if I were to tell you that Alabama Football could potentially have a third player in Heisman contention this season?

Alabama Football running back Jahmyr Gibbs could be a sleeper 2022 Heisman candidate

A player that is receiving a lot of attention this spring in Tuscaloosa, transfer running back Jahmyr Gibbs is a name to watch for as we enter the 2022 season.

One of the nation’s top overall transfers this offseason, Gibbs is a former four-star recruit who has spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career at Georgia Tech. Having rushed for a combined 1,206 yards across those two years, as well as having added 768 receiving yards, Gibbs is simply a player who can do it all for what will be a potent Crimson Tide offense in 2022.

Not only will Gibbs be one of Alabama’s top options in the backfield running the ball, but the 5-foot-11 junior is also one of the top pass-catching running backs in all of college football. In addition to that, Gibbs will also be one of the Crimson Tide’s primary kick return options in 2022, and comes to Tuscaloosa having returned a total of 31 kickoffs the last two years at Georgia Tech where he averaged 25.6 yards per return.

Now yes, it is no secret that Alabama’s 2022 running back room is deep with talent and depth. However, Gibbs will certainly see a significant number of opportunities through both the run and pass game, and could potentially lead that group this season in both rushing and receiving.

No, I’m not saying that Gibbs will win the Heisman Trophy in 2022. However, don’t be shocked if the junior is in Heisman contention towards the end of the year.
