Auburn Football: 3 takeaways from the Tigers 2022 spring game
By Matt Melton
For an Auburn Football program that enters the second year under head coach Bryan Harsin, the Tigers entered Saturday afternoon’s annual “A-Day” game with multiple question marks on both sides of the ball.
What are a few takeaways from the Tigers spring game, and were those questions answered on Saturday?
3 takeaways from the 2022 Auburn Football spring game
Finley and Ashford see majority of time at QB
The Auburn Football quarterback competition has been one of the more talked-about position battles within the SEC this offseason, with three of those names seeing time on Saturday (Zach Calzada did not play). The returning TJ Finley and Oregon transfer Robby Ashford split the quarterback duties during the first three quarters, while freshman Holden Geriner saw a majority of the time in the fourth quarter.
Tight end will once again be strength
A strength for the Tigers offense a year ago, Auburn returns one of the SEC’s top pass-catching tight ends in John Samuel Shenker who had a strong showing Saturday. In addition to Shenker, a few of the Tigers other tight ends also showed some flashes Saturday such as Brandon Frazier, Tyler Fromm, and Landon King who added an impressive touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter.
Sean Jackson potentially emerges
With backup running back Jarquez Hunter not playing, Sean Jackson was primarily the option early on who saw time alongside starting running back Tank Bigsby. Having only received a total of 12 carries as a freshman a year ago, Jackson could potentially see an increased role in the Auburn offense in 2022.
As the Tigers now enter the fall, the quarterback position will certainly continue to be the top question mark surrounding this Auburn team. After the Tigers spring game as well, it still feels like that starting job is wide open.
