Georgia Football: Looking back at the Bulldogs career of Alec Ogletree

One of the highest-rated linebacker recruits in Georgia Football history, Alec Ogletree came to Athens as a coveted prospect on the defensive side of the ball. A day-one impact player for the Bulldogs as well who enjoyed a massive junior season, where does Ogletree rank among the best Georgia linebackers in recent memory?

Looking back at the Georgia Football career of Alec Ogletree

As mentioned previously, Ogletree was a highly-rated prospect out of in-state Newnan High School in the Class of 2010. A five-star who was rated as the No. 1 inside linebacker nationally, Ogletree was also the No. 2 player in the state of Georgia out of high school, as well as the by-far top name in Georgia Football’s 2010 recruiting class.

Ogletree would go-on to see time as a freshman with the Bulldogs where he would emerge as a starter late in the year, collecting a total of 34 tackles in the process. That success would carry over into his sophomore season as well, totaling 52 tackles, 7.5 TFL, and three sacks for the year even despite missing time due to an injury.

Cemented as one of the most-exciting linebackers in the SEC entering his junior season, Ogletree would go-on to enjoy a phenomenal 2012 campaign as one of the defensive leaders for one of the nation’s top teams.

Appearing in a total of 10 games, Ogletree would rank fifth in the SEC with 111 total tackles for the Bulldogs, while also collecting a career-high 11.5 TFL and three sacks once again. Also ranking third in the SEC with 63 solo tackles, Ogletree’s junior season also included some memorable moments for the Bulldogs, headlined by his blocked field goal return for a touchdown against Alabama in the 2012 SEC Championship Game.

For his Georgia Football career overall, Ogletree would collect a total of 197 tackles during his three years in Athens before entering the 2013 NFL Draft where he would be selected with the No. 30 overall pick by the St. Louis Rams.

Ogletree would remain with the Rams for five seasons from 2013-17, and has since spent time with the New York Giants, New York Jets, and Chicago Bears. Currently a free agent, Ogletree has appeared in a total of 111 games across his nine-year NFL career up to this point, collecting a combined 766 tackles, 12 interceptions, and 7.5 sacks.
