SEC Football Way-Too-Early 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Alabama QB Bryce Young
Positives
The first thing that is noticeable when you watch the film on Bryce Young is his arm strength. Young whips the ball all over the field with ease and fluidity. Young should transition well to the NFL game as he can fit the ball into tight windows.
The next thing apparent on film was Young’s ability to move through his progression. Young manipulates the defense with his eyes and moves through his reads seamlessly. Recent quarterback prospects have been ‘slow processors’ – that will not be the case with Young.
Young not only throws with high-end arm strength but also throws with a nice touch. Young has a feel for the game and never seems rushed.
While Young is a maestro in the pocket with his footwork, he can also extend the play with his athleticism. Young throws the ball well on the run, and with his ability as a rusher, he places the defense in a quandary.
Bryce Young is just scratching the surface of his potential.
Negatives
The negative that garners the most attention is Young’s stature. At 5’11 190 lbs. Young does not possess the prototypical size for the quarterback position. Young would be best suited to bulk up and add enough weight to get him in the 205 lb. range. The NFL is not as vicious as it once was, but durability questions will abound for a player his size.
Young is also a one-year starter. Now, Young will be able to put this notion to bed with a strong 2022 season.
Overall
Bryce Young took home the Heisman Trophy. Unfortunately for Young, Alabama fell short in the National Championship game. Young is back to make another run at a National Title.
Young will have to do so without starting receivers Jameson Williams and John Metchie III, who are off to the NFL. We know the cupboard is not bare in Tuscaloosa as they reload at the WR position. Bryce Young is the favorite to be the top quarterback off the board and the No. 1 overall player selected in the 2023 NFL Draft.
