What would’ve happened if Alabama won the 2013 Iron Bowl?
If Alabama had won the 2013 Iron Bowl, there are two things that you could certainly say would’ve likely happened:
- Alabama would’ve had the chance to win their third straight national championship
- Adam Griffith’s kick would’ve become all-time SEC Football moment (if made)
The Crimson Tide entered the 2013 season having won the previous two BCS National Championships, and were well positioned that season to contend for a third, if not the favorite to win it all at seasons end. The No. 1 ranked team in the country entering the 2013 Iron Bowl as well, Alabama you could certainly argue would’ve been favored against Missouri in the SEC Championship game, as well as against Florida State should they have advanced.
In addition to that, the Crimson Tide could’ve also potentially won the game in overtime, but if Griffith’s field goal would’ve been good at the end of regulation, it would certainly be talked about today as an all-time SEC Football moment, similar to the Kick Six. For comparison on what it would be like as well, think similar to Van Tiffin’s kick to win the 1985 Iron Bowl, but in a top five matchup between two national championship contenders.
It’s obvious the benefit that a 2013 Iron Bowl win would’ve had on the Crimson Tide, a team that dropped to No. 3 after the loss, missed the 2013 SEC Championship Game, and went on to lose to No. 11 Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. Would Alabama have won their third consecutive BCS National Championship if not for the Kick Six?
