Georgia Football: Looking back at the Bulldogs career of Nick Chubb
By Matt Melton
One of the most-accomplished players in Georgia Football program history, there are few to ever wear a Bulldogs uniform that had a more-memorable collegiate career than Nick Chubb. A multi-year starter at running back for the Bulldogs who left Athens as one of the greatest players in program history, here is a look back at the storied Georgia career of Chubb.
Looking back at the Georgia Football career of Nick Chubb
An in-state prospect out of Cedartown High School, Chubb originally came to Georgia in the Bulldogs 2014 recruiting class, one that ranked eighth nationally. A class that also included three total five-star recruits, Chubb was one of those three, as well as the second five-star running back in that class alongside former Bulldogs great Sony Michel.
An instant-impact player with the Bulldogs, Chubb would become one of the SEC’s top running backs as a freshman in 2014, a season in which he rushed for 1,547 yards (No. 2 in SEC) and 14 touchdowns (led SEC) on 219 attempts (No. 2 in SEC).
Likely Chubb’s best single-season at Georgia, the freshman would also catch a total of 18 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns in 2014, earning numerous honors that included First Team All-SEC and the SEC Freshman of the Year. Averaging 7.1 YPC (No. 2 in SEC), Chubb would also lead the SEC in yards from scrimmage with 1,760 total, with his 16 total touchdowns also ranking first in the conference among non-quarterbacks.
Entering his 2015 sophomore season, Chubb would receive numerous preseason honors due to his success as a freshman, both within the SEC and on a national level. The former five-star’s 2015 campaign would however be cut short due to a season-ending injury against Tennessee mid-way through the year, with Chubb finishing his sophomore year rushing for 747 yards and seven touchdowns through six games with an average of 8.1 YPC which ranked first nationally.
After returning from injury in 2016, Chubb would go-on to receive a career-high 224 carries (No. 3 in SEC) as a junior, which he turned into 1,130 yards and eight touchdowns. Ranking seventh in the SEC in both rushing yards and yards from scrimmage, Chubb would eventually bypass the NFL Draft at the conclusion of his junior season, and return to Athens for his senior campaign in 2017.
As a senior, Chubb would rank fifth in the conference with 223 carries for a Bulldogs team that won the SEC and played for a national championship, which translated to 1,345 yards (No. 2 in SEC) and a career-high 15 touchdowns on the ground (No. 4 in SEC). Receiving All-SEC honors, Chubb would enter the 2018 NFL Draft at seasons end, and would be selected in the second round with the No. 35 overall pick by the Cleveland Browns.
Receiving a total of 758 carries from 2014-17, Chubb would conclude his Georgia Football career with a total of 4,769 rushing yards and 44 touchdowns, while also having caught 31 passes for 361 yards and four more scores during that span. Chubb is however remembered most by his rushing yardage total of 4,769, which currently ranks second all-time in SEC history behind only former Georgia star Herschel Walker.
Since entering the NFL in 2018, Chubb has appeared in a total of 58 games with the Browns from 2018-21, rushing for a total of 4,816 yards and 36 touchdowns on 908 carries, along with 92 catches for 751 yards and three more scores. A three-time Pro Bowler, Chubb is entering his fifth season with the Browns in 2022.
