1. Texas vs Texas A&M

Rivalry History

The Texas vs Texas A&M rivalry was the third longest running rivalry before its stoppage in 2012 and has been played on Thanksgiving a total of 63 times.

The last game of the season was reserved for the matchup and both schools even mention each other in their fight songs.

Each school has traditions in the week leading up to the game. Texas with the Hex Rally and Texas A&M with the Aggie Bonfire.

Texas and Texas A&M first met in 1894 with the Longhorns winning 38-0.

Texas won the last meeting 27-25 on a game-winning field goal by Justin Tucker.

Texas leads the series 76-37-5 and has the longest win streak with 10 from 1957 to 1966.

Notable Games

The 1921 matchup was the first football game broadcast in Texas. The game ended in a 0-0 tie.

In 1940, the Longhorns beat the Aggies 7-0 ending their 20 game winning streak and knocking Texas A&M out of a Rose Bowl appearance.

In 1984, the unranked Aggies beat the No.13 Longhorns 37-12 which started their longest win streak (6 games) in the series.

In 1999, Texas A&M played Texas just eight days after the Aggie Bonfire collapsed, killing 12 students and injuring 27 more. The Aggies went on to beat the No.7 ranked Longhorns 20-16 in what was at the time the largest crowd ever for a Texas football game (86,128).

Their last meeting was in 2011 on Thanksgiving Day where Texas went on the road to College Station to beat Texas A&M on game-winning field goal as time expired.

The Future

When Texas announced that they were joining the SEC, everybody’s heads turned to Texas A&M to see how they felt about reuniting with their old rival.

The Aggies left the Longhorns in the Big 12 back in 2012 during the last conference realignment and haven’t looked back since.

Now, to the joy of college football fans, one of the best rivalries in college football may be back as soon as 2025.
