SEC Football: 3 renewed rivalries when Texas and Oklahoma join
2. Oklahoma vs Missouri
Rivalry History
The Sooners and Tigers have a long history with each other having played annually from 1910 to 1995, with the omission of 1918 due to World War I.
In 1995, the Big 12 was formed and placed both teams in different divisions which prevented the matchup from continuing annually. Instead they played a home-and-home series every three years until 2012.
Starting in 1940, the Tiger-Sooner Peace Pipe was given as a traveling trophy to the winning team. It belonged to Chief White Eagle of the Pawnee Tribe.
But the exchange has not taken place since 1974 and the current location of the peace pipe is unknown.
Oklahoma leads the series 67-24-5. They also own the largest win streak in the series at 14 from 1946 to 1959 and have the largest victory when they won 77-0 in 1986.
Notable Games
In the 2007 Big 12 Championship Game, Missouri came in ranked No.1 in the country and was four quarters away from the BCS National Championship Game. But Oklahoma upset the Tigers 38-17 thwarting their championship hopes and stopping them from even reaching a BCS Bowl Game.
The very next season featured a rematch between both squads in the 2008 Big 12 Championship Game. Oklahoma won handily 62-21.
In 2010, No.18 Missouri upset No.1 ranked Oklahoma 36-27. Missouri fans also set the record for campus attendance at ESPN’s College GameDay.
The Future
When Oklahoma joins the SEC they’ll become Missouri’s most played conference rival by a wide margin.
And for Oklahoma, Missouri will be their second, right behind fellow incomer Texas.
As soon as 2025 this dormant border rivalry will be alive again.
