If there is one position in particular for Auburn Football that could be vital to the Tigers success in year two under head coach Bryan Harsin, it’s at quarterback. With previous starter Bo Nix having transferred to Oregon during the offseason, which names could see time at quarterback for the Tigers in 2022, and who is the likely favorite to start for Auburn at the position entering the fall?

TJ Finley

While there is arguably no clear leader in the Tigers offseason quarterback competition, if you had to make an argument for one name in particular however, if would likely be that of Finley, due to the fact that he took a majority of the first team reps during the spring.

After transferring from LSU last offseason, Finley was the Tigers backup quarterback for a majority of the 2021 season, but did become Auburn’s starter towards the end of the season after an injury to Nix. During his limited action a year ago as well, Finley did throw for a combined 827 yards with a 6:1 TD:INT, along with a 54.7 CMP%.

One of the SEC’s bigger quarterbacks at 6-foot-7 and 250 pounds, the former three-star now enters his junior season as one of the more experienced players at the position on the Auburn roster. However, Finley has seen some struggles at times over the last two seasons, in particular with turnovers, but did show improvement in that area last season after throwing five interceptions in limited action back in 2020 as a freshman.

Overall, Finley could very easily begin the year as Auburn’s starting quarterback. Even if that doesn’t happen however, it feels likely that Finley will see a significant amount of playing time in 2022 regardless.
